It'll cost less in the long run than if you try to put it in and something screws up. I was going crazy why the DVD-R media that was working fine previously would not work suddenly - a Google search later I read off a post on another q58z with the same problem.

I q58w an error "No Supported drive detected". I was installing Nero burner and after restart the DVD drive just stopped working. Mine, however, had a 'hardware error' and has to be replaced and since mine is out of warranty, guess who's going to be buying a new DVD player?

I also connected k series DVD drive only dvd read no write to my laptop and the drive works. I think this fits under the NOT catagory!! Sony doesn't list an update for that drive on the support page for that model. Post your DVD Media comments here.
